Proposed On-Street Bike Parking at Smith and Sackett

A current No Standing Zone will be put to use.

When residents requested the southeast corner of Smith and Sackett streets became a No Standing Zone, citing a need for increased visibility for all road users, the Department of Transportation responded.

And now, residents are about to get another request filled.

16 new city-rack bike parking racks will be installed at the corner, in the street, pending Community Board 6 executive committee support.

The plan for on-street bike parking, one of the first of its kind in Brooklyn, was proposed by the DOT at a Community Board 6 Transportation Committee meeting Thursday night, and given a unanimous recommendation.

The idea was hatched by the Sackett Street Block Association, which has also offered to help maintain the racks and the surrounding area.

"This to us is a dream!" said Sackett Street resident Jenny Mandel, who said she has lived on the block for 18 years, and seen the same accident occur at the intersection numerous times.

Jennifer Harris-Hernandez of the DOT said the plan would benefit both drivers and bikers.

It will "address the increased demand for bike parking and protect the No Standing Zone," she said.

The racks will make sure "people won't be allowed to sneak in and park there," she added.

On-street bike parking is already installed at Hoyt and Schermerhorn streets in Downtown Brooklyn.

The racks are expected to be installed next month, and should take about a day.
