The sale drew hundreds, and thousands of books were sold - an excellent turnout, according to Tamar Smith, Friends of the Library secretary. The goal, however, was "not only to fundraise, but to bring people to the library branch, to show them the space and to encourage involvement in the library," said Smith. "We've given out information about the Brooklyn Public Library, about the Friends group, petition against budget cuts... it was a community building activity as well as fundraising."

"We believe strongly in public libraries as a resource for our community, and we wanted to do anything we could to help it," said Aubrey Mayo, a visitor to the book sale.

"It was a great day," she said. "My daughter listened to stories, I got four books for ten dollars, and ate a cupcake. What more can you ask for?"
