UPDATED: Malia Mills Swimwear Closed After Fire in Building

The shop plans to re-open this week

UPDATE: Malia Mills Swimwear will reopen on Saturday, May 21.

Atlantic Avenue newcomer is temporarily closed.

On Saturday just after 10:30 a.m., a fire broke out in the office located behind the store, a fire department spokesperson said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire was stopped and put out before any merchandise could be damaged.

“The firemen got there before it spread to our store," said Carol Mills, sister of Malia and partner in the swimwear company, adding that they hope to reopen later this week, though no exact date has been set.

There were no injuries, said the fire department, but Mills said the back office is “totaled.”

On Saturday morning, two employees were bagging up pretty one and two-piece swimsuits, which would be treated for any possible smoke damage.

"Thankfully it didn't come into here," said store manager Brianna Miller.

A fire clean-up company worked over the weekend to remove the smoke odor from the store, said Mills.

Malia Mills opened her Atlantic Avenue store in March, bringing figure embracing swimsuits to Brooklyn. Mills' philosophy radiates around making women feel beautiful and confident in their bodies and in their swimsuits.

“Love thy differences” is a Mills tagline.

“Swimwear should represent sun, vacation, fun with friends and family. It is a joyous part of life,” said Mills in March. "And yet it becomes such a source of stress and anxiety.”

All of Malia Mills two-pieces are sold separately, allowing you to mix and match tops and bottoms to perfectly customize for your body. Your suit should look great on your body rather than trying to make your body look good enough in a suit.

In the case of a “swimsuit emergency," visit a Malia Mills location in Manhattan:

1031 Lexington at 74th/ 220 Columbus at 70th/ 199 Mulberry Street between Spring and Kenmare.
