Lander Calls Upon Lightstone To Halt Gowanus Project
Citing flooding along the canal and ongoing Sandy relief efforts, the Councilmember says, "It is essential to rethink our approach to the development of areas along the water's edge."
Following flooding of the Gowanus Canal during Hurricane Sandy, Councilman Brad Lander is urging New York City developer The Lightstone Group to halt their plans for a 700-unit project along the water way.
In an open letter written to Lightstone CEO David Lichtenstein on Tuesday, Lander stated he thought "it would be a serious mistake for you to proceed as though nothing had happened, without reconsidering or altering your plans, and putting over 1,000 new residents in harm’s way the next time an event of this magnitude occurs."
The proposed site for Lightstone's new residences at 363-365 Bond Street, like much of the area surrounding the canal, was under several feet of water during Hurricane Sandy.

As such, the Councilman is urging Lightstone to temporarily withdraw its application and to take part in a planning dialogue with local stakeholders, elected officials and public agencies "to account for the high risk of future storm surges."

Upon inquiry, Lightstone had no immediate comment regarding the letter.
