Juniper Galaxy: Wholesale, Out Of This World

A new women's boutique brings American and Danish fashions to Boerum Hill -- at wholesale prices.

More often than not, the quest for clothing at discounted or wholesale prices is a torturous expedition: piles and racks must be worked through, all the while shoving and elbowing neighboring pillagers out of your way in a desperate search for a deal. At the end of a shopping trip, however, what you may have saved in dollars, you have paid for dearly in experience.

No longer must you make this sacrifice -- well, at least not on Bond Street in Boerum Hill.

Juniper Galaxy, which opened last week, is the creation of Sine Hjort, a Danish import (though she has lived in New York for some 25 years) who possesses the light complexion, blonde hair and delicate speech that Scandinavian women are known for.

Whitewashed, sun-drenched and carefully lined with American and Danish designer women’s garments, Juniper Galaxy offers the experience of shopping at an upscale boutique – at wholesale prices.

Hjort had worked for many years in wholesale, selling Danish brands here in New York. But when the economy changed four years ago, alas so did women’s willingness to spend as much money on their wardrobe. And while today women are still hesitant to spend like they did before, what Hjort has observed, and marketed on, is that in fact women no longer want to dig through their closets, desperately trying to reinvent old pieces. We want new clothes!

“We recycled our clothes in our own wardrobes, but we’re tired. We want new pieces in our wardrobes,” reflects Hjort. “I look for discounted, wholesale prices and pass it on to you.”

The majority of the designers she carries are American, many green and organic, and “made close to where we are and eco-friendly.” Others are from her native Denmark, where she travels to handpick pieces.

You will find cottons, linens and knits, all in classic and versatile cuts and styles. Many of the bags are made of straw, paper or other recycled materials.

As if this wasn’t all appealing enough, Juniper Galaxy has a 400 square foot garden in back, where Hjort plans to host trunk shows, events and presentations of new designers amid lush greenery and flowing wine.

Looking into the future, Hjort would like to “keep growing and working and collaborating with up-and-coming designers.”

Juniper Galaxy in fact has an adjacent “design room,” in which Hjort hopes that young, new designers will be able to work. She will showcase their designs in the store and through garden presentations.

A selection of the designers you will find at Juniper Galaxy: Sophia Costas, USA (blouses and shirts retail at savings as large as $109 down to $40, and $249 down to $65), Designers Remix Collection, Denmark (dresses retail at a savings from $475 down to $80), Acrobati, USA, Archerie, USA, By Malene Birger, Denmark, Prarie NY, USA and soon Spitfire Sunglasses, USA. On February 15, Juniper Galaxy will begin carrying Jenny Han, a collection based out of Los Angeles.

Why waste time just to save money when you can save both at Juniper Galaxy?
