Enrollment Open at Two Local CSA Programs

Brooklyn Beet and Local Roots NYC are both accepting new members.

If recent high temperatures had you chomping at the bit for summer produce, chew on this news: Enrollment has opened at two local CSAs. Local Roots NYC and Brooklyn Beet both feature convenient neighborhood pick-up locations and varied selections for vegetable, fruit, dairy and other shares.

Local Roots NYC founder Wen-Jay Ying started her CSA in 2011 as a 12-week program that partners with local farmers to offer diverse food options such as vegetable, fruit, meat, cheese, egg, bread, grain, and even an artisanal Brooklyn share. The 2012 season will feature a new milk share with Ronnybrook Dairy upstate as well.

"I am happy to be working with some of my favorite Brooklyn purveyors," said Ying. "All of the people we chose to work with for the share have shown interest and passion for not only what they are doing but love for supporting farmers as much as we do."

Some of the Brooklyn purveyors included in her unique share include Brooklyn Soda Works, Liddabit Sweets, Ovenly and Mike's Hot Honey.

"We wanted to create a share with a huge array of things, like honey, which I use in everything I cook, and soda and kombucha," said Ying. "And what's totally awesome is that everyone we are working with are really good people. I feel very happy to be able to support them.

Some of Brooklyn Beet's offerings include vegetables from Angel Family Farms in Goshen, N.Y., Hepworth Farm fruit (which also services the Park Slope Food Co-Op), egg and pasta shares from Knoll Crest Farm, as well as bread, meat, cheese, syrup and coffee shares.

"We did a half veggie and half fruit shares as well as eggs last season," one member raved on Brownstoner last week. "We got a nice variety of both each week and never felt like we were overwhelmed with one particular item."

Brooklyn Beet also offers meat shares throughout the winter. For more information and to enroll in the 2012 membership, visit http://www.brooklynbeet.com
