Traffic Changes Coming Soon to Area Surrounding Pier 6
The DOT announces dates for construction to improve pedestrian access to Brooklyn Bridge Park
Construction to improve pedestrian access to the beloved Brooklyn Bridge Park is slated to begin at the end of the month, the DOT says.
The planned infrastructure improvements involve entrances along Atlantic Avenue, Furman Street and Columbia Street.
After original plans for DOT improvements to Pier 6 were deemed inadequate by community members and council representatives, the DOT has agreed to install intersection signal timing to help pedestrians and bicycle traffic safely across Columbia Street, as well as signals to ensure pedestrians and cyclists can cross the ominous BQE intersection that stands between the Pier 6 and Brooklyn Heights.
The move to improved access to the traffic-ridden park has been a labor of considerable effort from important community board members, with Community Board 2 and Community Board 6 passing motions for the DOT to take action.
With these improvements, pedestrians who frequent the park can hopefully eliminate the risk of speeding traffic and loosely enforced traffic control and focus on enjoying the improved features of Pier 6.
