Biscuits and Gravy from Abilene

Don't be fooled by the appearance...

is a great neighborhood gem for many reasons. It's small, unpretentious and basically the only dive in Carroll Gardens. The drinks aren't over priced, they don't offer fancy cocktails with absinthe and bitters and they are famous for their picklebacks. (Google it.)

But Abilene is more than just a bar. In fact, on the weekends, the lower Court Street hot spot is only actually closed for a few hours. The night ends at 4 a.m. and brunch begins at 11. The morning fare is absolutely hangover curing, but it's actually pretty good, too.

The king of the brunch menu is the biscuits and white sausage gravy with scrambled eggs. The homemade biscuits are crumbly and chewy, the gravy just salty enough. The eggs are fluffy - and plentiful - and there's actually something comfortable about the monochromatic meal.

Have a bloody mary (served in a pint glass) on the side.

Even if you weren't out til 4 a.m., Abilene is the place to be the next morning. And if it's warm, the sidewalk seating, and people watching, can't be beat.
